Removing Acne Scars Has Never Been So Easy!

I am sure everyone has breakouts during their puberty period and that is very normal. I thought it was going to be fine after the puberty stage, so I did not pay much attention to the acne or acne scars. Neither did I make an effort to take care my skin.

Things got worse as time passes by. I started to have even constant breakouts and acne problems. It all lasted from my secondary school days until the age of 25. I like to pick the pimples and remove the pus and this explains why I have acne scars. I started to become insecure. I have very low self-esteem and I feel unconfident when I have to meet people. Sometimes, people would call me nasty names and mock at my look. That is why acne scars have become my biggest skin concerns.

I tried many ways to improve my skin conditions, such as using premium skin care products, going to facial but it all doesn’t help. So, I did my research and found out that facial lasers are able to help me to improve my skin. But what kind of laser suit best for me? This is when I was introduced by a good friend of mine to Doctor Ryan Tan, an experienced aesthetic doctor of Aesthetic Central Clinic.

The Consultation

Doctor Ryan is very friendly and approachable. He explains to you on your current skin conditions and advise you on what kind of treatment is best for your skin. He explained to me on what kind of machine(s) and treatments work best for the different kind of acne scars. He gave me a sense of assurance. If you are like me, unsure of what kind of treatment is best for you. You may raise as many questions as you want to him during the consultation and he will be happy to answer all your queries.

The Treatment

As my condition is much more complicated, Doctor Ryan advised me to do 3 different treatments; Subcision, INFINI RF Micro-needling, and SECRET RF Micro-needling.

First of all, Subcision is a minor surgical procedure used for treating depressed cutaneous scars and wrinkles. It is performed using a special hypodermic needle inserted through a puncture in the skin surface. The sharp edge of the needle is used to break fibrotic strands that are tethering the scar to the underlying tissue. The release of the fibrotic strands and new collagen deposition caused by wound healing leads to cosmetic improvement of the scar. Bruises could be seen after the treatment, but this is normal. In order to heal faster, doctor may prescribe anti-biotics – both topical and/or oral.

Secondly, we have INFINI RF Micro-needling. INFINI has the ability to deliver two treatment techniques into one device which is the Radio Frequency and Micro-needling. This targets skin problems such as wrinkles, sagging skin, and acne scars – including deep scars. INFINI treatment resurfaces the skin and smoothens deep acne scars to rebuild your confidence in your skin. Lastly, the Secret RF Micro-needling. The SECRET RF treatment was performed on me on my second appointment (which is 2 months later, after INFINI RF). SECRET RF is a revolutionary non-surgical treatment that uses fractional radiofrequency (RF) and micro-needles for the treatment of depressed acne scars. These depressed acne scars include rolling scars, boxscar scars, and ice-pick scars. The Secret RF works on the theory of tissue coagulation and hemostasis, transferring controlled heat to specific parts of the skin.

What’s the difference with INFINI? Infini uses insulated microneedle radiofrequency in the treatment of acne scars while Secret RF uses non-insulated microneedle radiofrequency. Certain scars that do not respond well to INFINI RF respond to Secret RF. We also realized that the two treatments have a synergistic effect on each other and work better together rather than in isolation.

The Procedure

Before the start of the treatment, I was told to cleanse my face first so that the clinic assistant can apply numbing cream on my face. There will be 2 applications of the numbing cream.

1^st application of the numbing cream will last for 20 mins while the 2^nd application will last for 10 mins. As I was doing Subcision, Doctor Ryan injected LA (Local Anesthesia) onto certain areas of the cheek to reduce the pain during the treatment. The whole treatment was almost painless. I can only feel the snapping of the tissue under the skin which I felt was quite therapeutic to me.

Dr Ryan Tan performed the INFINI or SECRET RF Micro-needling treatment right after Subcision. The techniques are almost similar, but the machines are different. For the pain level, I would rate 3 out of 10. I encountered some bleeding during the treatment, but it will stop once the treatment ends.

What’s the downtime after the treatment?

Subcision will take a longer downtime as you will expect bruises and wounds to heal up. You may take anti-biotic to expedite the recovery. INFINI and SECRET RF Micro-needling have much lesser downtime. It takes me 1-2 days for the face redness to subsides. The most important thing is to constantly hydrate and protect your skin from the sun.

Second Treatment. You can see there’s a huge change of the skin tone and some scars has started to smoothen.

However, I was told that I will need more sessions of both Infini and Secret RF for better results as the scars have been with me for half of my life. I will be going for them again so do wait for my review for the acne scars removal treatment part 2.
